Sloghing off

Sloughing off…

I have begun the possessions molting. I have sold extra tires, my TV and other items. I will be having my big moving sale next weekend. I can’t wait. I am selling everything that does not fit in my car. This money will fund my gasoline, but I will have to work along the way for other expenses. This multi-state journey will end up in Atlanta, where I will be visiting my brother. He is older than me and has had some serious health issues. I want to spend some time with him and my sister before I leave for Samoa next summer. Who knows, maybe I will enjoy the teaching so much that I will continue on to other countries and do more volunteer work. The one challenge will be leaving my 2 dogs. They are my children and I will have to figure out how to get them overseas eventually.

I look forward to sharing photography and stories from the road with all of you. I know that this may be a scary time for people between the Wall Street Welfare and the upcoming elections, but maybe you too should consider living a more simple life and do some volunteer work abroad. This is the PERFECT time to get out of the country for a while and learn new skills and share your lives with others. I am not talking about giving up on all that you have planned on, but maybe your plans weren’t the best? I know mine were not. Living in Alaska and really trying to live a more basic lifestyle has been very difficult, but now I really enjoy it and have lost so many of the irrational concerns I used to have. I am not preaching- I am merely suggesting that maybe you are ready for a change too!

Preparation

I am sitting in my office (I run a public school program for at-risk youth) and I am listening to Zombie Nation! Thump Thump Thump Thump Thump….awoahwoah awoawoa woa wo uh wo uh wo….LOVE IT. See “Shaun of the Dead” if you have not seen it!!!

I am leaving Oct 31. The outline of my plan is as follows: Go down to Homer, AK (best place in the state) and spend a little time writing and preparing for the journey. Then I will head out of state and into the Yukon. That will begin a week on the ALCAN and down to Seattle. Then to Bend Oregon to check it out some more. Then I will go down to northern California winding my way down to Sequoia National Park, Death Valley and then over toward Denver. And then…south to great sand dunes park and on into New Mexico. I will spend some time in my favorite town in the states – Taos. Then on to Ojo Caliente, Albuquerque, Acoma, and then White Sands. I will then head out toward Arizona via the VLA and stop in Tucson to see my old friend. I then plan to drive along the border. The idea will be to visit border towns interviewing people along the way about border life and how life has changed since 9/11. It will be a photographic journal. I hope to turn it all into a book. I will also be looking for interesting signs along the way. I mean that literally! I will photograph clever, funny and weird signs around America. This may become a book as well. If you have any tips for things I should look for, photograph or people I should meet along the way...email me or comment!

I will then continue along the boarder, visiting friends up in Austin and then across the south to Atlanta to visit family. By then, I may need to dip my toes in the water off Key West. The end result is that I need to be ready to leave for Samoa next July. I will be teaching a year of classes to children in Samoa as a volunteer with WorldTeach. And I have to say…if McCain and Palin win, I will probably keep going!!!!!

So that is the plan. I am not sure how I will fund all of this, but energy has a way of sending you what you need!

I was thinking about this blogging idea last night, and I realized I have been missing out on an opportunity! I have always been credited with being a good counselor to people, especially family and relationship issues. I have no desire to go back to school to take boring classes on theory! I think you either have the ability to listen and help with creative solutions or you don’t! So, I think I will start one more blog as a dear Abbey sort of site or Savage Love type of forum.

This past weekend it snowed hard on the way back from the Arctic Circle. It was a great drive, but the snow came down so hard we had to stop the car and crawl so that we might see the edge of the road. It was a bit dodgy. I apologize for the boring nature of all of this, but soon it will pick up. I will post tales from the trail and photos as well. For now, only friends and their friends know about this blog. Perhaps, more will visit once I am on my way. Until I leave, I will try to pick a topic per day to write about so that you, my readers, will have some idea of the weird person that I am! :)

Am I really Doing This II

I have never been a fan of blogging. I figured it was for lonely people who felt a need to get the attention of strangers. However, since I have spent my life trying to get attention in the "real world" it makes sense that I may as well try the cyber world. I am starting this in advance of what may be a long roadtrip to create my first book, as well as the start of a new chapter in my life.

I will promise you this much: I will do my best to be as brutally honest as I can be. I understand that these are my views, not yours. I will ignore any nasty, childish comments. I would love real advice and input about the topics I address and my travels.

Okay. It is 1 month until I leave Alaska. I have been here for most of 14 years. This has become my home. Like a man leaving prison after 14 years, I wonder if I can live on the outside again! We shall see. My travels will take me from Alaska, through Canada and all around the states. I will begin in the west and move east. I also plan to drive the US/Mexico border for a book idea I am working on. Then it will be a year in Samoa volunteer teaching with WorldTeach!
....

More to come and my bio.
Wow...I did it! My first Blog entry.
